Cheesewring day trip
Trip venue, date and time
Cheesewring Quarry, Sunday 15th October, 10am – 4pm
The crag and the approach
Sadly no cheese here!! There is plenty of imposing and atmospheric quarried granite. There is trad a plenty here, and sport climbing starting at roughly 6c (don’t believe the lies about the 6b….definitely a little harder than that…).
The approach is grassy, uneven, not too hilly, and roughly 1.5 km from Minions car park.
What we’ll be doing
We’re planning on a day of top roping. This will be similar to climbing indoors however, we will have to set the ropes up by attaching them to the top of the rockface. We will be doing climbs across the grades and difficulty; outdoor climbing can feel more challenging as there aren’t nice, coloured routes and obvious hand and foot holds. Cheesewring is also popular with visitors, so we may well have an audience when climbing.
Those that already know how to lead and second trad are welcome to do so, but please make sure you’re able to be self-sufficient, as there won’t be instruction for this.
If the weather looks poor, we’re hoping to go to The Barn Climbing Centre (Google Maps) in Milton Abbot instead.
What skill level is required
The trip is suitable for all club members of all climbing abilities who are comfortable climbing top-rope indoors and want to try outdoors.
What to wear
For the walk-in and between climbs: Sturdy footwear, waterproof jacket, warm layers, hat and gloves.
Keep an eye on the weather forecast and dress and pack accordingly. We hope to be fairly sheltered from the wind but bring warm layers just in case. There is a chance of showers, so bring waterproofs.
What to bring
Please bring your climbing shoes. If you have them, please bring your harness, helmet and belay device. Please bring a headtorch if you have one.
We have a small supply of harnesses and helmets people can borrow. Please message Kieran on Signal or email kieran.woolley3@gmail.com if you need to borrow these.
Bring plenty to eat and drink and snacks. The weather might be chilly at times, so a hot drink might be good, too.
Etiquette
By filling out the form, you are agreeing to try to keep to good outdoor climbing etiquette! Please be respectful to other climbers and wildlife and follow our club etiquette principles.
Transport, parking and access
Meet at Minions car park at 10am. Parking is free in this car park.
We look forward to seeing you at the crag!
