Daddyhole cliffs trip

Trip venue, date and time

Daddyhole cliffs, Sunday 30th July, 10am – dusk

The crag and the approach

Save your giggles please, we’re a sensible and mature club.

The cliffs at Daddyhole promise to be a fun day out. The limestone is less worn and polished than at other limestone venues (like Chudleigh), and we’ll be close to the sea but not so close we have to worry about the tide. There’s a fantastic selection of climbs across a wide range of difficulties.

This is a fairly new crag – some of the committee have visited before, but this is our first club trip – so please be patient, there will be a bit of finding our way around when we arrive (no jokes about fumbling around, please).

For more information about what the crag’s like, check out its UKC entry linked below.

What we’ll be doing

We’re planning on a day of top roping. This will be similar to climbing indoors however we will have to set the ropes up by attaching them to the top of the rockface. We will be doing climbs across the grades and difficulty; outdoor climbing can feel more challenging as there isn’t nice, coloured routes and obvious hand and foot holds. Haytor is also popular with visitors so we may well have an audience when climbing.

Those that already know how to lead and second trad are welcome to do so, but please make sure you’re able to be self-sufficient as there won’t be instruction for this.

If the weather looks poor, we’ll try and rearrange for the next weekend. We may not know until a day or two before! We’re trying to avoid wet and windy misery as much as possible.

We have a maximum capacity of 12 top roping participants, if we aren’t able to accommodate you this month then your name will be at the top of the list for the next trip.

What skill level is required

The trip is suitable for all club members, of all climbing abilities who are comfortable climbing top-rope indoors and want to try outdoors.

What to wear

For the walk in and between climbs: Sturdy footwear, waterproof jacket, warm layers, hat and gloves.

Keep an eye on the weather forecast and dress and pack accordingly. We are hoping to be fairly sheltered from the wind, but bring warm layers just in case. There is a chance of showers so bring waterproofs.

What to bring

Please bring your climbing shoes. If you have them, please bring your harness, helmet and belay device.

We have a small supply of harnesses and helmets people can borrow. Please message Kieran on Signal or email kieran.woolley3@gmail.com if you need to borrow these.

Bring plenty to eat and drink and snacks. The weather might be chilly at times so a hot drink might be good too.

Etiquette

By filling out the form you are agreeing to try to keep to good outdoor climbing etiquette! Please be respectful to other climbers and wildlife and follow our club etiquette principles
